EURO 2024 round of 16 fixtures Result: Austria 1-2 Türkiye

Türkiye defeated Austria 2-1 on a highly dramatic evening to go to the round of eight for the third time.

Christoph Baumgartner claims that Austria’s “unique selling point” is its quick beginnings, but Türkiye was the one trading quickly out of the gate here. Merih Demiral scored with just 57 seconds remaining in the game after Austria was unable to clear the opening corner.

Moments later, Baumgartner missed a shot, and then, with five minutes remaining, Austria came dangerously close to rushing in from a corner of their own.

With clear confidence, Arda Güler risked his arm from the midway line, while Merih Demiral moved across from another set piece. Austria leveled the score and was about to score again when Baumgartner poked Romano Schmid’s cross narrowly wide.

The tension of the match quickly increased after Ralf Rangnick’s double half-time substitution, thus it was not surprising that five minutes later, Marko Arnautović came the closest to restoring parity, but Mert Günok smothered his attempt.

The wall immediately faced Türkiye’s backs, but it was a barrier now reinforced by the overwhelming momentum behind Mert Günok’s objective.

They weathered the storm and returned to enemy territory gradually but steadily. One more corner, one more throw from Arda Güler, one more header from Merih Demiral. It struck the back of the net this time.

Even so, Austria was not finished as Michael Gregoritsch, a halftime substitution, scored another goal from a corner after Stefan Posch’s flick-on found its way to the back post.

The drama was unsurpassed, the noise was deafening, the stress was overwhelming, and the rain was falling nonstop. Only after Mert Günok’s amazing stop in the 95th minute to block Baumgartner’s header did Türkiye manage to hold fast.
