Euro 2024 Semi-Final Result: Netherlands 1-2 England

With a stunning goal in additional time, Ollie Watkins, an England substitute, guaranteed a spot in the UEFA EURO 2024 final.

The game began with pyrotechnics, as is typical in Germany, but the explosions on the field soon overshadowed that show. After Xavi Simons took Declan Rice’s position and advanced seven minutes into the semi-final, he managed to stretch yet still fire a quick shot past Jordan Pickford.

For the third consecutive knockout game, England was behind. Their reaction. After Denzel Dumfries was found to have infringed, Harry Kane continued the Three Lions’ spot-kick mastery with an attempt that gave Bart Verbruggen no chance and after 11 minutes it was all square. Thus far, so hectic. But why end there?

Soon after, Dumfries was in the middle of things once more, stopping Phil Foden with a goal-line clearing. The Dutch right-back was then at the opposite end, heading into the bar. The outstanding Foden answered in kind, slicing the upright with a delicate curving blow. It was end-to-end stuff, but if the first half was a tense thriller, the second half was an action-packed blockbuster.

The opportunities dwindled, but the drama and intensity persisted. England regained the upper hand after the Netherlands gradually did so. A score by Bukayo Saka was disallowed for offside. When the stoppage-time twist materialized, extra time was imminent. Watkins, a fellow replacement, received a pass from Cole Palmer, created a tiny bit of space, and expertly sent the ball into the far corner. Three Lions let forth a roar. Berlin is the next stop.
