Euro Result: Germany 2-0 Hungary
With goals from İlkay Gündoğan and Jamal Musiala, Germany were the first side to guarantee their spot in the UEFA EURO 2024 knockout stages.
Even though Germany had a harder night than their 5-1 triumph against Scotland on Matchday 1, Julian Nagelsmann‘s squad was nevertheless able to secure the three points, guaranteeing that they would position as the best third-place team in the group stage.
Following a scoreless first half, Musiala made history by being the first player to score more than once at this EURO by adding to his goal against Scotland the previous week, which gave the home team the lead.
On minute 26, Manuel Neuer was called upon to make his 17th appearance in a EURO, matching Gianluigi Buffon’s record as a goalkeeper. He did it by diving to his right and expertly save a curling free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Ten minutes into the second half, Toni Kroos had a chance to double Germany’s advantage, but Péter Gulácsi parried his deflected shot, while Barnabás Varga missed the target with his header for Hungary.
Maximilian Mittelstädt’s low cross was well struck into the net by Gündoğan to ensure Germany’s spot in the round of 16. This basically ended the game.
