Euro Result – Germany 5-1 Scotland
Brief description of the match: Germany kicked things off big.
In the first sixty seconds, Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn faced a test from Florian Wirtz, the talisman for Leverkusen during their run to their first-ever Bundesliga title the previous season. However, the ball from Antonio Rüdiger was deemed offside. Less than 10 minutes later, though, Wirtz found himself on the scoresheet with his first attempt after Joshua Kimmich’s pass found its way through the inside of the post and into the bottom corner.
Germany maintained their pressure on Scotland and increased their lead halfway through the first half, encouraged on by their boisterous fans. After a deft passing play, Kai Havertz found Musiala, who created space inside a packed penalty area and smashed the ball onto the net’s roof. Just before halftime, Ryan Porteous’s team’s situation took a turn for the worse when he was sent off for a foul on İlkay Gündoğan inside the area. Havertz converted the next spot kick with ease.
After the intermission, Clarke’s charges continued unabated. Leroy Sané and Maximilian Mittelstädt both had good chances to extend Germany’s advantage, but Niclas Füllkrug, a replacement, ultimately made it 4-0 with a powerful goal when the ball kindly dropped to him on the outskirts of the box for Dortmund. Although Rüdiger gave Scotland a slender lead with an unintentional header past Manuel Neuer, Emre Can sealed the victory for the hosts with a low finish in additional time.
