Euro Result: Netherlands 0-0 France

In Leipzig, the Netherlands and France balanced each other out at the top of Group D with four points apiece.

Ultimately, a draw would likely satisfy both teams somewhat, since they are now both one point clear of Austria in third place heading into the group’s final games the following week.

The defenders were the real MVPs of the match, with Virgil van Dijk of the Netherlands standing out for his outstanding performance in stifling France’s formidable attacking threats.

In just a minute, the Oranje came dangerously close to taking the lead when Jeremie Frimpong used his lightning-fast speed to break free and grab onto a through pass. However, France goalkeeper Mike Maignan pushed the winger’s shot over the post.

When Adrien Rabiot placed the ball on a plate for him near the goal in the fifteenth minute, it appeared as though Les Bleus captain Antoine Griezmann would open the score. However, the veteran striker was unable to get the ball out of his feet, and Griezmann curled wide a few seconds later.

After breaking the Dutch offside trap, Marcus Thuram raced onto a fantastic ball from Jules Koundé, but he was only able to blast over from a close range, meaning that the first half ended in a draw.

In the second period, there wasn’t much goalmouth activity until Thuram’s effort went wide when an unexpected opening appeared in front of him. Thuram is 26 years old.

Rabiot’s late burst down the left was especially concerning as France increased the tempo and appeared to be the team most likely to score. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, though, and Les Bleus coach Didier Deschamps decided to keep Kylian Mbappé on the bench since there was no way past the orange wall.
