Euro Result: Scotland 0-1 Hungary
Hungary moved into third place after a tight match at Stuttgart Arena was resolved by a late goal from substitute Kevin Csoboth.
Kevin Csoboth scored in the final minute of extra time to offer Hungary, one of the better third-placed teams, a chance to advance to the round of 16, in a match that was a must-win for both Scotland and Hungary.
Scotland had the better of the early possession, but Hungary appeared more threatening in front of the goal, although not ever really challenging Scotland’s goalie, Angus Gunn. After Dominik Szoboszlai gave them a free kick, Willi Orbán’s header went just wide of the crossbar to give them their best opportunity right before the break.
Hungary maintained their lead going into the second half, but Scotland’s intensity also increased significantly when Ché Adams sent their first meaningful attempt over the crossbar on minute 53. Overall, the tempo quickened due to the swift transitions and opportunities on both sides. Play was stopped in the sixty-twoth minute after Hungary’s Barnabás Varga and Scotland’s Angus Gunn collided.
The extra time turned out to be a mad dash to the finish. Csoboth’s curling attempt against the post was Hungary’s greatest opportunity to yet. Scotland responded by giving the Hungarian defense a great deal of trouble, but in the tenth minute of stoppage time, Csoboth launched a quick counterattack. The goal was the most recent in EURO history.
Scotland, who finished fourth in Group A, dutifully withdrew from EURO 2024 after scoring just one point. Hungary now awaits news on whether their European adventure continues.
