Euro Result: Slovakia 1-1 Romania
Euro Result: Slovakia 1-1 Romania
Both teams advanced to the round of 16, with Romania winning Group E and Slovakia finishing third with a goal and a point apiece.
Slovakia got out to a fast start, applying pressure high up the pitch and making life difficult
for Romania’s defense. The first real chance came from a header by Juraj Kucka, and then Dávid Hancko’s attempt went high.
Romania reacted quickly, with Andrei Rațiu’s curler being excellently saved by Martin Dźbravka as their first shot on goal. Then came the greatest chance for Francesco Calzona’s team, a free kick from Duda that went just wide. But the Slovakian midfielder scored with a perfect header in less than a minute.
In response, Romania launched another Rațiu attack, which Dúbravka once more stopped. However, soon after, Romania was awarded a penalty for a foul on Ianis Hagi, restoring parity. Răzvan Marin offered the convincing translation.
The game kept on ebbing and flowing. After breaking from the left, Florin Niță blocked Lukáš Haraslín’s shot. Subsequently, Marin launched himself from the box’s edge, but Dúbravka blocked his effort.
Niță was in a good position to make a save for Dávid Strelec as well. Then, Slovakia struck again, this time with a Haraslín curler that flew just wide of the target. Whatever the case, both teams advanced to the round of 16 with a point apiece, Romania making history by winning a EURO group for the first time and the Slovaks placing third with the same four points.
