Euro Result: Switzerland 1-1 Germany

Germany’s late goal from Niclas Füllkrug gave them a 1-1 tie with Switzerland and first place in Group A. Their opponents will face each other in the round of 16.

In an attempt to repeat the performance of the first two games, Julian Nagelsmann announced the starting lineup for the third straight game. The game slowed after two corners in the first three minutes, with Germany maintaining possession and tempo but unable to generate many opportunities.

Near the half-hour mark, the Nati seized the lead thanks to a fantastic team play. Remo Freuler set up Bologna teammate Ndoye, who scored his first goal for his senior international career at the ideal moment. As the game brightened up, Ndoye terrified the German supporters once again by missing a shot.

Shortly before halftime, Antonio Rüdiger’s header almost brought Die Mannschaft level. Germany had a great chance to start the second half, but Yann Sommer stopped a strong shot by Jamal Musiala, and İlkay Gündoğan was unable to create a decent play off the rebound. Toni Kroos then made a futile attempt at it.

Germany persisted in its efforts. Sommer was concerned about Kai Havertz’s header. Then the home team had their finest opportunity to yet when Joshua Kimmich attempted a close-range goal, but Manuel Akanji’s block was outstanding. Havertz also made a threat, just missing the top of the bar with his header.

Even after Ruben Vargas’ goal was disallowed, Switzerland’s first competitive victory against Germany in 86 years appeared certain until Füllkrug performed what he does best. Germany maintained their lead in the group as the super sub defeated Sommer with a fantastic header from a cross by fellow substitute David Raum.
