Euro Result: Türkiye 0-3 Portugal
With one game remaining, Portugal advanced to the UEFA EURO 2024 knockout rounds with to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva.
Portugal had to learn their lesson the hard way on Matchday 1 against Czechia, but they immediately gained control of the situation. They started setting the pace with Vitinha at the controls, and after 21 minutes, Bernardo Silva coolly finished off a deflected cut-back by Nuno Mendes to put them ahead.
In the worst possible way for Türkiye, one quickly turned into two. A furious scramble failed to trigger the warning klaxon in time for João Palhinha’s attempted through ball, but Samet Akaydin’s back pass did, as goalie Altay Bayındır advanced unseen.
Eleven minutes into the second half, Altay Bayındır—one of four changes made by Türkiye following their victory against Georgia—was pulling the ball out of his goal once more as Cristiano Ronaldo sprang the offside trap and selflessly squared for Bruno Fernandes. The game was over, but the Crescent-Stars continued to fight.
After winning their first game on the opening day of a EURO, Türkiye suffers an equal-to-highest loss in the tournament. Even if they draw with Czechia on Wednesday, they will still go to the next round of matches with Portugal, whose victory maintains their perfect record of qualifying out of groups.
